On June 23, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was in the midst of a heated impeachment hearing before a Senate Committee, but she seemed more interested in playing Solitaire on her phone.
According to The Star, Waiguru was glued to her smartphone, engrossed in the card game, while the committee deliberated on her fate.
Waiguru had earlier addressed the committee, terming her impeachment as unfortunate and sponsored by people who were keen to settle political scores.
“Impeachment and removal from office was never intended, and should never be based on falsities, innuendo, rumor, hearsay, conjecture, and certainly not malice,” Waiguru stated.
The 11-member Senate Committee has until June 25, 2020, to table a report of its findings in the house.
On June 9, 2020, 23 out of 33 Kirinyaga MCAs voted in support of the motion to remove Governor Waiguru, citing gross misconduct, abuse of office, and gross violation of the constitution as the main grounds for her removal.
