On June 22, 2020, a plane flew over Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, carrying a banner that read 'White Lives Matter Burnley'.
The plane appeared during a Premier League game between Manchester City and Burnley, just as players from both teams were taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Burnley issued a statement condemning the actions, stating that they would work with authorities to identify those responsible and issue lifetime bans.
The Premier League had previously joined the international Black Lives Matter campaign in response to the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis last month.
Players in all 12 Premier League games since the season's restart have worn 'Black Lives Matter' on their shirts in place of their names.
Burnley captain Ben Mee expressed his embarrassment and shame over the incident, stating that the club had tried to stop it and that the individuals responsible did not represent the club's values.
