Manchester City's Argentine striker Sergio Aguero has been sent to Spain for further tests on a knee injury that threatens to end his season.

The 32-year-old aggravated a problem that had bothered him for over a month during Manchester City's 5-0 win over Burnley on Monday at the Etihad Stadium.

After the match, City manager Pep Guardiola expressed concerns that Aguero's campaign may be over.

Manchester City has revealed that Aguero will travel to Barcelona to see Dr. Ramon Cugat, a renowned doctor who has treated several City players, including Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany.

“Sergio Aguero suffered damage to his left knee in our recent 5-0 win over Burnley,” Manchester City said in a statement.

“The striker will now travel to Barcelona to see Dr. Ramon Cugat for further examination. Everyone at City wishes Sergio the best with his recovery.”

Aguero, who is Manchester City's all-time record goalscorer with 23 goals this season, has taken to Twitter to confirm the injury, saying, “The scans I did this morning have confirmed that I have damaged my left knee. It’s a pity but I’m in good spirits and so focused to come back as soon as possible. Thank you very much for all your messages!”

With Aguero's season hanging in the balance, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus is likely to replace him in the starting line-up.
