On June 23, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru faced a humiliating experience as she was forced to stand in silence for over 30 minutes during her impeachment hearing in the Senate.
The hearing, led by Senator Cleophas Malala, was a result of the Motion passed by the Kirinyaga County Assembly, which accused Waiguru of Gross Violation of the Constitution, Abuse of Office, and Gross Misconduct.
As per protocol, Waiguru was ordered to stand in silence while the charges against her were read out. However, the lengthy charge list took over 30 minutes to be read in its entirety, leaving Waiguru with no option but to stand silently, occasionally casting a menacing look at the media present.
Senator Malala emphasized that the committee would give room for all parties to voice their arguments before making any determination. He reiterated that the hearing was one of the most important functions of the Senate under the Constitution.
Waiguru, on the other hand, had delivered mountains of evidence to the Senate on June 20, 2020, in defense of her impeachment. She expressed confidence in her legal team and believed her response was sound, stating, "I have full confidence in my legal team and believe my response is sound. Let's allow the Senate to do its work. I have confidence in the rule of law and believe that Truth and Justice will be our shield and defender."
