On June 23, 2020, Safaricom Foundation made a significant donation to support vulnerable youth in Kenya through its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.

As part of the programme, the foundation is working with Zizi Afrique Foundation and ToolKit iSkills to roll out a TVET programme focusing on Plumbing, Welding, Food and Beverage, and Electrical Engineering.

The foundation has donated over 70 smartphones to enable students access eLearning materials while awaiting the reopening of learning institutions.

"We want to empower the students who have been shortlisted for the Safaricom Foundation TVET scholarship programme to commence learning even as we wait for this Covid-19 period to end," said Steve Chege, Trustee, Safaricom Foundation.

The programme, launched in March, aims to set up an ICT-enabled Skills Center at Nairobi's Waithaka Vocational Training Centre and provide TVET scholarships to close to 1,000 students across various institutions over the next two years.

"Through this scholarship programme, we want to reach some of the most vulnerable youth from across the country and give them access to training opportunities in employable areas, and increase transition to employment," said Renaldah Mjomba from Zizi Afrique.
