Kenya's COVID-19 caseload has reached 4,952, with 155 new cases recorded on June 23, 2020, according to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi.
Dr. Mwangangi announced the new cases at a news conference, stating that the cases were detected from 4,171 samples tested since Monday.
Of the new cases, 120 are male and 35 are female, with Nairobi County accounting for 104 cases.
“The youngest is a one year old and the oldest is 77 year old,” Dr. Mwangangi said, highlighting the age range of those affected.
She also emphasized the need for strict adherence to COVID-19 containment measures, citing the establishment of community transmission in Nairobi County.
“Indeed this disease has established community transmission and from our disaggregation today of Nairobi County you can see that each and every border is affected and therefore we need to escalate our containment measures individually,” she said.
As part of the containment measures, authorities have implemented a cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera counties.
Dr. Mwangangi also reported that 102 people had been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total recovery in the country to 1,782.
However, the death toll rose to 128 after 3 more patients succumbed to the virus.
“It is really important for those who may have chronic conditions to take care of their health because we have continued to see that the patients we are losing are those with other underlying conditions,” Dr. Mwangangi said.
