On June 22, 2020, President Kenyatta convened a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting at the KICC, marking the beginning of a purge within the Jubilee party. The move was seen as a disciplinary measure against members who had been dissenting from the party's leadership.

Aden Duale, the outgoing Majority Leader, had served in the position for seven years, making him the first occupant of the office since the 2010 constitution was promulgated. He was replaced by Amos Kimunya, the MP for Kipipiri, who was backed by over 120 Jubilee legislators.

Suba MP John Mbadi praised Duale for his service, thanking him for his honesty and dedication to the position. Mbadi acknowledged the challenging environment in which Duale served, but commended him for outdoing himself.

Speaking on the occasion, Duale thanked his colleagues and acknowledged the results of his tenure. He stated, 'The results are out there and they speak for themselves. I will hence not belabor to layout the same. I was not removed for inefficiency or lack of delivery but simply the cycle of all the career of politicians.'
