June 23, 2020 - Governor Anne Waiguru's impeachment hearing took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as a Senate Committee declined her lawyer's request to strike out crucial witness statements.

The 11-person committee, tasked with investigating the proposed removal of Governor Waiguru, stated that the documents containing four witness statements would be used and argued out during the hearing.

Waiguru's lawyer, Paul Nyamodi, had argued that the documents contained new evidence and should be eliminated. However, the committee disagreed, paving the way for the documents to be used as evidence in the hearing.

The charges against Governor Waiguru include gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, and gross misconduct. She was ousted on June 9, 2020, after 23 out of 33 MCAs voted in support of her impeachment.

The motion to impeach Governor Waiguru was tabled on March 31 by Mutira MCA David Kinyua Wangui, who faulted the governor for deliberately failing to submit county plans and policies to the County Assembly for approval.

The Senate sanctioned the committee to investigate whether there are sufficient grounds to uphold the impeachment of the governor or clear her of the charges to continue holding office.
