On June 22, 2020, a 32-year-old man, Josiah Namunyu, died in a police cell at Mayanja police post in Bungoma South after developing breathing complications.

According to a police report filed under OB Number 22/6/2020, Namunyu had been detained over defilement allegations and was scheduled to be arraigned later that day.

Police say Namunyu had been subjected to mob justice prior to his arrest and had been treated at Bungoma County Referral Hospital and discharged after his condition improved.

At 5:30 am, police officers Silvester Nyakundi and Jackline Muthoni reported hearing a knock from the male cell and found Namunyu having a seizure and difficulty breathing.

Despite efforts to save him, Namunyu was pronounced dead, and his body was taken to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital morgue for postmortem.
