Las Palmas Youth Star Jorge Sanchez Vaca Dies in Canal Tragedy

On June 23, 2020, the Spanish footballing world was left in shock following the news of the death of Las Palmas' youngster Jorge Sanchez Vaca.

The 17-year-old player had planned to join the club's U19 squad next season, according to Las Palmas.

Tragically, Sanchez Vaca fell to his death at the Orellana Canal near Don Benito, in the province of Badajoz, southwestern Spain.

His 15-year-old friend who was with him at the time of the incident also died.

Las Palmas announced the death of the player, expressing their condolences to his family and friends.

"UD Las Palmas are deeply saddened by the death of our former academy player Jorge Sánchez Vaca who, coming from UD Jandía de Fuerteventura, had planned to join our U19s next season. We send our condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace," the club wrote on Twitter.

Sanchez Vaca was a promising young player who was progressing towards becoming a first-team player.

He spent the season on loan at non-league UD Jandia and was expected to join Las Palmas U19 squad for next season.
