June 23, 2020 - In a significant development in the ongoing impeachment case against Governor Anne Waiguru, the 11-member Senate Committee has rejected her request to expunge documents containing witness statements from the senate records.
The committee's decision comes after Waiguru's lawyer, Paul Nyamodi, sought to have the documents struck out, arguing that they contain new evidence that is contrary to Standing Order 19.
However, the committee has ruled that the documents shall remain, and their admissibility will be argued out during the course of the hearing.
Waiguru is facing charges of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and manipulating public procurement procedures, including illegally conferring a benefit of Sh10 million to herself for travel allowance.
The Kirinyaga County Assembly will argue its case before the committee on Tuesday, while Waiguru will take the stand to defend herself against the allegations on Wednesday.
The committee will then retreat to scrutinize the submissions and file a report, which will be tabled on the floor on Friday.
