On June 19, 2020, bodaboda operators in Mwihoko, Githurai, held a peaceful protest against Kiambu County for destroying their shelters.
The protesters claimed that county officials had destroyed their shelters in the late hours of the previous night, leaving them exposed to the harsh sun and rain.
"A few months ago, Thika MP Patrick 'Jungle' Wainaina had set up shelters for us in this area, but other leaders who do not want development are trying to destroy them," said Mwangi Mwiheko, a local youth leader.
He alleged that there were a few leaders in Kiambu who did not want to see their colleagues helping the youth.
The protesters vowed to continue fighting for their rights until their demands were met.
"Youth are the ones suffering the most because they do not have jobs, and therefore, they will not accept being divided again," said Mwiheko.
Stephen Kimemia, a bodaboda operator in Mwihoko, accused the perpetrators of being politicians who wanted to benefit from the situation.
"An investigation should be conducted to identify the individuals who destroyed the shelters," he said.
Kimemia said that the youth were now ready to accept help from any leader, whether from Mombasa, Kisumu, or Nairobi.
"As youth from Mwihoko and other areas, we will not accept being divided by a few leaders for their own benefit," he said.
He added that they were now facing a difficult situation due to the ongoing rain, which was hindering their efforts to work.
"We urge the public to come to our aid and help us," he said.
