On June 20, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Nairobi's Mukuru-Kayaba slums, claiming the life of a 38-year-old boda boda rider, Thomas Ngunya Mwangi.
According to eyewitnesses, Mwangi was taking a bath when he accidentally touched a faulty water heater, resulting in electrocution.
Neighbors reported hearing Mwangi scream for help, but by the time they rushed to assist him, they found him lying half-naked with one hand holding the water heater.
"We rushed to the house where we met smoke engulfing the whole house. My husband kicked the door since it had been locked from inside but it was too late. We found him lying down half-naked with one hand holding the water heater. My husband switched it off but he was already dead," a neighbor recounted.
Confirming the incident, Nyumba kumi chairman Jacob Ibrahim cautioned residents to exercise caution when dealing with electrical appliances at home.
Just days prior, another man had died in a separate incident involving the illegal connection of power from a transformer in the Industrial Area.
