Published on June 23, 2020, a Kenyan police officer, Patrick Ndiema, was arraigned before a judge in Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi and charged with the murder of 17-year-old Yassin Hussein Moyo.
Yassin was shot dead on the balcony of his home in Huruma, a poor neighbourhood in Nairobi, in March as police officers used force to clear the streets during the coronavirus lockdown.
His death was one of over a dozen alleged murders by Kenyan police since the lockdown began in late March, sparking accusations of excessive force and unlawful killings.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused police officers of using tear gas, whippings, and other forms of violence to enforce the curfew, leading to unnecessary deaths.
