On March 30, 13-year-old Yassin Hussein Moyo was shot while standing on his balcony in Huruma, Nairobi, as police officers implemented a dusk to dawn curfew. He died shortly after undergoing treatment at a Nairobi Hospital.
After a lengthy investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, approved the arrest and prosecution of Duncan Ndiema, the police officer accused of fatally shooting Yassin.
On June 23, Ndiema appeared before High Court Judge Luka Kimaru and pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.
However, his plea was deferred after his lawyer, Danstan Omari, stated that Ndiema had been admitted to Mbagathi Hospital pending the results of a coronavirus test. Ndiema had tested negative for the virus despite exhibiting coronavirus-like symptoms on June 19.
He has been remanded at Capitol Hill Police Station pending the determination of his bail application on Wednesday.
