On August 4, 1950, Peter Sam Mugatha was born in Muranga County, Kenya, to Elizabeth Wacu and Sam Mitheko. His family later moved to Nairobi, where he attended St Michaels Elementary School in Makadara.

After completing his elementary education, Peter attended Upper Hill High School in Nairobi, Kenya. Following his graduation, he worked as a cashier at the New Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, a position he held until 1974.

Seeking further education, Peter left Kenya to pursue his studies in the United States. He graduated from Paul Smiths College in New York with a Culinary Degree and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Health Administration from Brockport University in New York.

On June 23, 2020, the family of Peter Sam Mugatha announced his passing after an illness bravely borne. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family was unable to hold their usual funeral gatherings, but they plan to celebrate his life at a later date.
