Before registering a business in Kenya, it's essential to search for an available business name. This process is crucial as it ensures that your business name is unique and not already in use by another company. Once your name search comes back positive, your proposed business name remains in reservation for a maximum of 30 days. After this period, you might need to conduct a new name search application.
Requirements for Business Name Registration ¶
- A positive name search response.
- True and complete details of all business proprietors.
- Postal address for the proposed business.
- Physical address for the proposed business, including geographical location and plot number where applicable.
- Copies of ID cards or passports for all proprietors and partners.
- Clear and current passport photos of partners.
- Copies of KRA pin certificates for all proprietors.
- Ksh 850 in your MPESA (plus transaction fees).
Steps to Follow ¶
- Log in to your eCitizen account and go to the 'Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice' tab.
- Click on 'business registration or name search' and proceed with the application.
- Enter all required details, including scanning and uploading necessary documents.
- eCitizen will generate a BN/2 form, which you must download, print, and fill in the required details.
- Have all applicable proprietors sign the form, scan, and upload it back to the eCitizen portal.
- Submit your application and proceed with the payment process.
- Choose MPESA and follow the payment instructions.
- Once eCitizen picks up your payment, you'll be redirected to a new page where you can download the payment invoice.
- The application process takes about 1-2 working days for approval.
After 48 hours, log in to your eCitizen portal to check for your approval. If the application was successful, you'll have the option to download and print the registration certificate.
