On June 24, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru will face a crucial test of her leadership as her impeachment trial commences in the Senate.

The trial, which marks a significant milestone in the governor's tenure, follows a motion filed by the Kirinyaga County Assembly, accusing Waiguru of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and manipulating public procurement procedures.

Specifically, the county assembly alleges that Waiguru illegally conferred a benefit of KSh 10 million to herself for travel allowance, a claim that has sparked intense debate and scrutiny.

Waiguru, who resigned as Devolution CS in 2015 amidst massive corruption allegations in the National Youth Service (NYS), is expected to appear before the Senate committee to defend herself against the allegations.

Her defence team, led by husband Kamotho Waiganjo, has submitted voluminous documents to the clerk of the Senate in support of Waiguru's case.

Waiguru herself confirmed the submission of her responses to the impeachment motion on her Twitter handle, stating, "In compliance with the Senate's request I have today filed my responses to the impeachment motion filed for my removal from office by the Kirinyaga County Assembly. May truth, justice and the rule of law prevail."
