Reports of the death of Ohangla musician Lady Maureen have been greatly exaggerated. According to her mother, Margaret Akinyi Onyango, Lady Maureen is alive and receiving treatment at a Tanzanian hospital.

Earlier this week, a Kenyan blog had reported that Lady Maureen, whose real name is Maureen Achieng, had died in the wee hours of Tuesday, June 23, 2020. However, Ms. Onyango has clarified that it was actually Maureen Nyar Awendo, a vocalist and member of Lady Maureen's band, who passed away.

“Maureen Nyar Awendo was receiving treatment at the hospital where my child is admitted. She (the deceased) was a member of my daughter’s band. May her soul rest in peace,” said Ms. Onyango.

Lady Maureen had previously given an update on her health condition in January 2020, allaying fears that she was in critical condition. At the time, she was admitted at Pastor Machage Memorial Hospital in Migori County, where she was being treated for a severe stomach infection.

“I am ailing, but not dead. I was told that I would, most likely, be discharged from hospital in the next five days,” Lady Maureen told K24 Digital on January 30, 2020.
