This archive report was first published on 23 June 2020.

On a fateful day in July 2014, 73 Media Max employees, including Eric Njoka, Betty Kyallo, and Jalang'o, received the devastating news that they were no longer needed.

Fast forward to 2020, BBC presenter Anne Ngugi, who went through a similar experience when she was working at K24, has taken to social media to offer emotional support to her former colleagues.

Ngugi, who was five months pregnant at the time, recalled the difficult journey she faced after being retrenched, saying it was not easy as she thought she was the best and never expected to be let go.

She shared her emotional letter to her former colleagues, which read in part:

"To my Colleagues at Mediamax who have tasted rejection at a time the world is fighting a pandemic and a company I believe you all loved to work has just said adieus! I feel compelled to encourage you today as someone who went through where you are right now! I know the feeling of receiving the news that you are no longer needed!"

Ngugi also shared her personal struggles after being retrenched, saying she felt rejected, depressed, and lost her self-esteem. However, she encouraged her former colleagues to remain hopeful and to know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

"There is always a light at the end of the tunnel! Remain hopeful: there is something good and useful after a long period of hardship and despair! Am a phone call away Incase you need a voice of encouragement!" she wrote.
