Published on June 23, 2020, South Korea has been dealing with a second wave of COVID-19 cases, which experts believe was triggered by a public holiday in early May.

The country's extensive 'trace, test and treat' programme has helped bring the disease under control, but the recent surge in cases has raised concerns.

As of Tuesday, South Korea reported 46 new cases, taking the country's total to 12,484. Of these, 30 were people arriving from overseas.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon warned that the capital would have to go back to strict social distancing measures if the number of infections in the city topped 30 on each of the next three days.

President Moon Jae-in expressed confidence that the virus can still be controlled, citing the success of basic disinfection rules and government guidelines.

However, the daily case count has been increasing, with around 35 to 50 cases reported in the last month, mostly in the Seoul metropolitan area.
