On June 23, 2020, the tarmacking of the Sh457 million Bushangala–Lusiola–Chavakalli junction road in Kakamega County began, marking a significant step towards enhancing road connectivity between Kakamega and Vihiga counties.
Spanning 13 kilometers, the road will provide a smoother linkage between the two counties, easing communication and movement challenges that have plagued residents for decades.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya announced that his administration would cover the cost of tarmacking an additional four kilometers of the road that extends into Vihiga County, citing financial constraints as the reason why Vihiga County could not undertake the project.
"We have decided to tarmac part of four kilometres that is in Vihiga County because our neighbours could not do it following our requests due to financial constraints," Governor Oparanya explained.
The project, which is expected to be completed by 2021, is a two-year undertaking that has already made significant progress, with construction work currently at 35% completion.
"Construction is going on and status of the road now is about 35 per cent done," said Collins Matemba, Kakamega County Executive Committee Member for Transport and Roads, during an inspection of the road.
The road is a key infrastructure project in Kakamega County, and its completion is expected to boost economic activities in the region.
