On June 22, 2020, a plane flew over Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, carrying a banner that read 'White Lives Matter Burnley' as the Premier League resumed behind closed doors following the COVID-19 outbreak.
The plane appeared shortly after players from both Manchester City and Burnley took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, a gesture that had become a common sight in the Premier League since the restart of the season.
As part of the league's support for the Black Lives Matter movement, all players in the 12 Premier League games since the restart of the season had worn 'Black Lives Matter' on their shirts in place of their names.
The 'White Lives Matter Burnley' banner was a stark contrast to the league's show of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, which was sparked by the death of George Floyd, a Black man, while in Minneapolis police custody last month.
There was no indication who had organised the plane and banner, but the incident sparked widespread condemnation and outrage on social media.
