On June 22, 2020, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, addressed an online conference, warning that the novel coronavirus pandemic is still accelerating.

According to the WHO, the pandemic's effects will be felt for decades, with the greatest threat facing the world being the lack of global solidarity and leadership.

"We cannot defeat this pandemic with a divided world," Tedros emphasized, highlighting the need for global cooperation to combat the virus.

The WHO has warned of a new and dangerous phase of the pandemic, with people tiring of lockdowns despite the disease's rapid spread.

As of June 2020, the COVID-19 illness had killed over 465,000 people and infected almost nine million worldwide, with surges reported in the Americas and parts of Asia.

Despite the economic damage caused by lockdowns, the WHO maintains that the pandemic still poses a major threat, with its effects extending beyond health to economic, social, and political crises.
