German football league CEO Christian Seifert announced on Monday that the value of TV rights for the Bundesliga will drop slightly over the 2021-2025 period, from 1.16 billion euros (Sh138.3bn) to 1.1 billion euros (Sh131.8bn) per season.
This marks the first decrease in the value of a newly negotiated Bundesliga rights package since 2002, with a total figure of 4.4 billion euros (Sh527.3bn).
Current broadcasters Sky and DAZN will share the matches, with Sky losing its Sunday matches to DAZN.
Seifert defended the deal, stating that it is comparable to those offered to Europe's other major football leagues, and offers stability to the clubs in a time of uncertainty.
“Who knows what would have happened without the coronavirus,” Seifert said, hinting that the contract could set a new trend in the value of sports broadcasting contracts following the COVID-19 pandemic.
