On June 22, 2020, Aden Duale, the ousted Jubilee Majority Leader, faced a significant loss of privileges and perks after being replaced by Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya.
As the Majority Leader, Duale had been entitled to a monthly salary of Sh1,056,000, which is higher than his colleagues. He also received a responsibility allowance of about Sh138,000 monthly and had access to three top-range GK vehicles, a lucrative car fuel card, and an additional Sh300,000 monthly for hospitality.
Furthermore, Duale had a team of staff, including a researcher, policy analyst, and legal officer, a secretary, personal assistant, and an office assistant, who were fully paid by the Public Service Commission. He also had extra security officers, with a maximum of five, stationed at his rural and Nairobi homes, as well as a government-provided driver and a chase car.
However, following his removal, Duale will have to contend with slashed allowances and lose other privileges. He will remain with only one bodyguard and will no longer have access to the government-provided driver and chase car.
Additionally, Duale's removal will affect the pensions of staff who were assigned to him, as the pension is based on one's last basic salary.
According to insiders, Duale's removal was sealed in February after he informed a senior government official that he needed to clear with another office before pushing an agenda in Parliament. This marked the beginning of the end for Duale.
