Published on June 22, 2020, Muigai wa Njoroge, a Kikuyu Benga musician, has found himself in hot water over his latest single, 'Ino Migunda', which translates to 'These Pieces of Land'. The song has sparked controversy, with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) summoning him to appear before them.

The NCIC has taken issue with the song's lyrics, which they claim are threatening and insulting, and could potentially disrupt the harmony among Kenyan communities.

According to the letter sent to Muigai wa Njoroge, he is required to appear before the commission on Friday, June 26, 2020, at their office in Upper Hill. Failure to do so could result in contempt of court charges.

The song, which has garnered over 600,000 views since its release six days ago, speaks to land issues and the politics of dynasties. Muigai wa Njoroge is critical of individuals who have inherited their wealth from their fathers but continue to oppress the poor.

Some of the song's lyrics include:

‘This land will be subdivided equally since it cannot be sliced into pieces for human consumption.'

‘There will come a time when the common man will not tolerate your oppression anymore.'

He also questions the government's recent demolition of houses in Kariobangi and Ruai, asking if it was truly urgent, given the COVID-19 pandemic and heavy rainfall.
