A mother's desperate act of desperation has led to her arrest in Nyamira County. Irene Kemunto, the mother of a seven-year-old child, was arrested on June 19, 2020, for allegedly selling her son for Sh14,000.
According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the incident occurred between June 10 and June 19, 2020. The child had gone missing from Elementaita in Nakuru County, and a tracing was done after it appeared that the man who married the child's mother and child bore his name was found in Nyansiongo in Borabu sub-County.
Mariba stated that the accused woman's mother had reported the disappearance of the grandson at Elementaita, and the matter was booked under OB number 18/06/2020. The woman who was arrested with the kid told police that she had legitimately acquired custody of the child.
Police are still investigating the matter pending prosecution. "Currently, the two suspects are in police custody as they await charges to be opened against them," Mariba said.
This is not the first incident of a mother selling her child. In February 2020, a 23-year-old woman was arrested in Migori Town after she went public with plans to sell her two daughters to raise Sh400,000.
