On June 22, 2020, leaflets calling for mass action to force Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru out of office were circulated across Kirinyaga County, appealing to residents to come out in large numbers for the demos.
The leaflets, written in English and Kikuyu language, stated that the people of Kirinyaga were tired of corruption and demanded that the governor must go.
According to the leaflets, the people of Kirinyaga were tired of corruption and empty promises, with one leaflet reading, "People of Kirinyaga are tired of corruption. We don’t want any more empty promises."
However, the police claimed that the planned demonstration was illegal, as the organizers had not notified the authorities.
Anti-riot police officers were deployed in full riot gear to patrol the streets on foot and in police vehicles to keep off demonstrators from the main towns in the county.
Kirinyaga Commissioner Jim Njoka downplayed the deployment of police but warned that security officers would not allow any illegal demos and would take severe action against anyone who tries to disturb peace in the county.
Meanwhile, the Kirinyaga County Assembly was abuzz with activity as MCAs and their lawyers put last-minute touches to their case for the impeachment of Waiguru by the Special Senate Committee.
