On June 20, 2020, a group of 20 people, including a police officer, were arrested for violating COVID-19 safety measures at a pub in Pipeline estate, Nairobi.

The officer, Irene Doris (service number 101217), who is attached to Industrial Area Police Station, was among those arrested at Club Sparrows.

According to a police report filed at Embakasi Police Station, the bar had been operating with impunity, disregarding measures put in place to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.

"Following a tip-off, the police officers swung into action and arrested the 20 individuals, including the police officer and the owner of the pub, who had been enjoying protection from the officer," the report reads.

During the arrest, the officer in question became violent and started hurling beer bottles at the officer manning the report desk, smashing two beer bottles in the process.

However, no one was injured in the incident, and the officer was subdued by two female officers and placed inside the police cells.
