MediaMax, a Kenyan media company, has laid off over 100 employees, including popular TV anchors Nancy Onyancha and Joab Mwaura, in a move that has left many in the industry shocked.
According to reports, the company cited financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the mass layoffs.
Nancy Onyancha and Joab Mwaura, who were among the employees let go, have taken to social media to reassure their fans that they will be back on air soon.
"I have had a great time working at K24 for the past 7 years, and I will be looking for new opportunities," Onyancha said in a statement.
Other employees who lost their jobs include Ken Wariahe, Isabella Kituri, Caroline Wambui, Shukri Wachu, Apollo Kamu, Mercy Milanoi, Joy Kiruki, Gloria Milimu, and Kimani Githuku, among others.
MediaMax has been struggling financially due to the pandemic, and the layoffs are seen as a desperate attempt to cut costs.
Many of the affected employees have taken to social media to express their disappointment and frustration at the sudden layoffs.
"This is a sad day for the media industry in Kenya," one of the affected employees tweeted.
MediaMax has not commented on the layoffs, but it is clear that the company is facing a tough time financially.
