Kenya has recorded 59 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of cases in the country to 4,797, as of June 22, 2020.
According to Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi, all the new cases are Kenyans, with 47 males and 12 females.
The new cases were identified from 2,354 samples tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the total cumulative samples tested to 142,366.
Of the new cases, the age distribution is as follows: males and females.
Meanwhile, 73 more people have been discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,682.
Unfortunately, two others succumbed to the COVID-19 disease in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 125.
The cases are spread out in various counties, including Nairobi (28), Mombasa (21), Kilifi (3), Kiambu (2), Machakos (2), Kisii (1), Bungoma (1), and Webuye (1).
Health CAS Mwangangi emphasized the importance of community-based education and outreach programs in containing the spread of the virus.
She noted that the Health Ministry is working closely with various community-based groups, including non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations, to educate people on how to contain the spread of the virus.
As part of this effort, over 59,000 trained Community Health Volunteers have been deployed in all 47 counties, reaching over 12 million households.
