On June 22, 2020, the government reiterated its stance on the ban on public gatherings, citing the need to observe social distancing to combat COVID-19.
However, this directive seems to be selectively enforced, with leaders and politicians openly defying the rules.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto recently met with over 170 lawmakers at a Jubilee Party Parliamentary Group meeting in Nairobi, despite the ban on gatherings of more than 15 people.
Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi emphasized the importance of social distancing, saying, 'You are your own person. Do not follow what the leaders are doing.'
Meanwhile, police tear-gassed Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and his supporters as they attempted to hold a rally in Malava town, citing the ban on public gatherings.
Several individuals have been arrested and forced into quarantine for violating the ban, but leaders like President Kenyatta and Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli have held meetings with large attendance, seemingly exempt from the rules.
