On June 22, 2020, the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) until March 15, 2021, in a move aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the war-torn country.
According to a resolution seen by The East African, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres reported that the Council had renewed the mandate, which covers political and security developments, the humanitarian and human rights situation, and progress on the mission's mandate.
Mr. Guterres praised the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) for supporting South Sudan's government, particularly in the formation of a unity government.
However, he expressed concern over the recent clashes in Central Equatoria State between South Sudan People Defense Forces and SPLA-IO and National Salvation Front, urging parties to uphold international humanitarian laws and allow aid agencies to deliver relief where needed.
