TV Anchor Nancy Onyancha and Job Mwaura Among Journalists Sacked ¶
On June 21, 2020, Mediamax, a Kenyan media house owned by the Kenyatta family, fired over 100 employees, including TV anchor Nancy Onyancha and her husband Job Mwaura, who were both working at K24.
The couple, who tied the knot in a lavish wedding in 2018, took to social media to announce their exit from the company, citing their readiness for their next big assignment.
According to reports, the management and employees had been in a longstanding stalemate after the former imposed a 50% pay cut, which some workers found unlawful and sued the company.
It is alleged that most of the casualties of the sacking were those who took the media company to court. The management, however, said the retrenchment was due to the effects of COVID-19, which had affected business.
Other employees who were fired include Ken Wariahe, Isabella Kituri, Caroline Wambui, Shukri Wachu, Apollo Kamau, Mercy Milanoi, Joy Kiruki, Gloria Milimu, and Kimani Githuku, among others.
Mediamax had previously laid off 160 employees in October 2019, and the latest sacking has left many wondering about the future of the company.
