On June 20, 2020, online reports emerged claiming that Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), had been flown to China for medical treatment.
However, ODM Director of Communications, Phillip Etale, swiftly refuted these claims, stating that Odinga was actually in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the African Union's High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
Etale shared a schedule of the virtual Pan African Conference on the Grand Inga Dam, which Odinga was attending, and confirmed that he was in Kinshasa, DRC, at the time.
Despite the government's travel ban due to COVID-19, it remains unclear how Odinga was able to travel out of the country.
