Thika-based Africa Spirits has been at the center of a high-stakes theft case after reports emerged of the disappearance of alcohol worth over Sh2 billion from the brewing plant.
The plant, owned by tycoon Humphrey Kariuki, was closed in January 2019, but the theft only came to light recently.
According to reports, a contingent of General Service Unit officers was deployed to the plant last Friday, marking it as a crime scene and putting it under 24-hour police surveillance.
Other items that have reportedly gone missing include counterfeit excise duty stamps seized by police during last year's raid.
Local police bosses have remained tight-lipped about the heightened security at the firm, but journalists who witnessed the deployment of GSU officers described the scene as 'surreal.'
Businessman Humphrey Kariuki's lawyer, Cecil Miller, welcomed the beefing up of security at the firm but called for police accountability, saying, 'We are concerned that the exhibits which are the property of our client seem to have gone missing from the reports we are getting in the media. The police must be brought to account.'
