Morocco Eases Covid-19 Restrictions Amid Ongoing Pandemic

On Sunday, June 21, 2020, Morocco announced 138 new Covid-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the North African country to 9,977.

The Ministry of Health reported 61 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 8,284. Unfortunately, the death toll rose to 214 with one new fatality recorded in the last 24 hours, according to Hind Ezzine, head of the Department of Epidemic Diseases.

Additionally, 5,131 individuals who had contact with coronavirus patients are still under medical surveillance, and 14 patients are in intensive care units. The Covid-19 death rate in Morocco stabilizes at 2.2 percent, and the recovery rate at 83 percent, the official noted.

As the country continues to battle the pandemic, Morocco has announced plans to relax travel restrictions and reopen cafes and restaurants starting from June 25. Public transport between cities and domestic flights will also resume on the same date, subject to specific conditions.

China has provided significant assistance to Morocco in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. A batch of medical supplies donated by the government of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was transported to Casablanca-Settat in Morocco on June 8. China Development Bank also sent a batch of donations, including respirators and medical protective masks, to Morocco on May 14. Furthermore, China's Guizhou Province donated 15,000 surgical gloves, 20,000 medical masks, and 2,000 protective suits to help protect Moroccan medical workers.
