Abubakar Mohamed Ali, a renowned Lamu rights activist, has passed away after a long illness. Born in Lamu, Ali was a fierce advocate for environmental justice and human rights.
Ali was the founder of Save Lamu, an organization that fought against the construction of a coal-powered project in Lamu. He also championed the cause of fishermen who were adversely affected by the ongoing dredging and construction of the Lamu Port.
Under his leadership, Save Lamu won numerous environment-related cases, which led to the halt of coal processing firms in the county. Fellow activists have described him as a 'fearless leader' who always fought for justice.
