June 22, 2020 - In a bid to curb police brutality, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has asked Kenyans to report cases of police brutality by sending videos of rogue officers to the authorities.

Speaking during a Twitter chat with Kenyans on Monday, Mutyambai noted that some cases of brutality occur in remote areas, making it difficult for them to be traced and dealt with.

"We encourage all citizens to keep reporting cases of police brutality. I'm aware some of these cases occur at night and others in remote parts of Kenya. Forward videos to us," Mutyambai said.

The move comes after a report by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) revealed that 15 people have been killed and 31 others injured by police officers since Kenya heightened security measures to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

According to IPOA, about 87 complaints, including deaths, shootings, harassment, assaults resulting in serious injuries, robbery, inhuman treatment, and sexual assault, are currently being investigated by the Authority.

"After preliminary investigations, fifteen (15) deaths and thirty-one (31) incidents where victims sustained injuries have directly been linked to actions of police officers during the curfew enforcement," said IPOA chairperson Anne Makori in a statement.
