On June 22, 2020, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua expressed his skepticism towards the ongoing coalition building in the country, stating that a radical shift in politics is necessary to address the current socio-economic crisis.

Speaking at a news conference in Mavoko, Machakos County, Dr. Mutua criticized leaders who are joining President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party, saying they are doing so based on tribal affiliations rather than ideology or ability.

'It's quiet laughable that a leader can be rewarded and invited to the table not based on his ideology, previous work or ability but because of his tribe and tribal bloc,' he said.

Dr. Mutua described the leaders as 'tribal chiefs seeking a place at the dining table for themselves without any regard for the country's development.'

He also criticized the practice of rewarding politicians based on their numbers, saying that those who are getting into working agreements with Jubilee are Kanu men whose time has passed.

Dr. Mutua called for a new way of doing politics, one that is based on ideologies and not tribal affiliations, saying that 'poverty does not discriminate on tribal lines.'

He also emphasized the need for out-of-the-box solutions to address the current economic crisis sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic, saying that tribal outfits are not equipped to provide such solutions.
