Kenya's National Assembly has amended the Public Roads Toll Act to increase penalties for motorists who fail to pay toll fees.

As of July 1, 2020, drivers who skip toll stations without paying the required fees will face fines of up to Sh. 50,000 or a six-month jail term.

Those who refuse to stop at toll stations or fraudulently drive through without paying will also be slapped with the hefty fine or imprisonment.

Additionally, motorists who drive through toll stations not designated for their vehicle type will face similar punishment.

The Finance and National Planning Committee, chaired by Joseph Limo, made the amendment to enhance penalties for toll fee evasion.

According to the Finance Bill 2020, the court will have the power to order offenders to pay the prescribed toll fees.

The government aims to establish a toll fund and introduce toll fees on major national roads, including the Nairobi-Nakuru, Nairobi-Mombasa, Nairobi-Thika, and Southern Bypass in Nairobi.
