On June 22, 2020, a Jubilee Party Parliamentary Group meeting at the Kenya International Convention Centre in Nairobi marked a significant shift in leadership roles within the party.
Garissa Town MP Aden Duale, who had been serving as the National Assembly Majority Leader, was shown the door in favor of former Finance Minister and Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya.
Kimunya's appointment was seen as a move to address concerns over Duale's loyalty to President Uhuru Kenyatta, with some party members accusing him of being too close to Deputy President William Ruto.
According to sources, Duale's removal had been in the cards following a spirited campaign led by Kieni MP Kanini Kega, who collected 126 signatures from Jubilee Party members in support of Duale's ejection from the National Assembly role.
Remarking on the situation, Kimunya stated that Duale is a victim of the times, citing his loyalty to Ruto as the primary reason for his removal.
Kimunya's comments echoed the sentiments of many within the party, who believe that Duale's close ties to Ruto have made him a liability in the eyes of party leaders.
As the purge of Ruto allies continues, the malcontent within Jubilee is still growing, with a new building, Jubilee Asili, being opened to house ejected leaders.
