On June 22, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha announced that the process of assessing the status of schools and colleges was underway to pave the way for their gradual reopening in September.

Magoha's goal was to reduce contact in learning institutions by having fewer learners, thereby minimizing the risk of the disease spreading when the institutions reopen.

He emphasized that the reopening of learning institutions should prioritize transition and examination cohorts in schools, universities, teachers' training colleges, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Magoha also stated that decisions regarding the reopening of learning institutions would be made based on prevailing circumstances and increased knowledge of the coronavirus disease.
