On June 22, 2020, Senegal and Monaco forward Keita Balde shed light on the issue of racism in Spain, revealing the struggles faced by many black families during the coronavirus crisis.

Keita Balde, a 25-year-old born in Arbucies and raised in Barcelona, has been actively involved in charitable donations for years. He recently took it upon himself to source accommodation and food for 150 black families who had been turned away by hotels.

According to Balde, this incident highlights the endemic nature of racism in Spain. He was drawn to the problem after watching a video shot by filmmaker Paco Leon, which showcased the injustices faced by seasonal workers, including Serigne Mamadou. Balde also witnessed the struggles of workers in Lleida through social media.

“Black lives seem to matter if your name is Keita Balde, but if you’re a part-time worker in Lleida, your life doesn’t matter,” Balde told El Mundo.

He further emphasized the need for action, stating, “Maybe they didn’t want to rent anything to a black boy. I felt I had to do what I could to help.”

Keita Balde has also provided financial assistance to 80 key workers in Barcelona during the Covid-19 pandemic. He has been committed to giving back to the community since his early days as a young player with Barcelona's Camp Nou outfit.

“I’ve financed a mosque and a school in Senegal, I’ve helped with the pandemic in Europe… I like to be like this,” he said.

Keita Balde's philanthropic efforts have been ongoing since his youth, and he continues to share his resources with those in need.
