Mediamax Networks Ltd has started a new round of layoffs, with over 100 employees across various departments being let go. The company cited the Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the retrenchment, but insiders believe it is using the outbreak as a scapegoat for internal inefficiencies and mismanagement.
The redundancy notice issued on May 21, 2020 expired yesterday, allowing the management to proceed with the dismissals. The meetings to discuss the redundancy and terminal dues with the affected employees are being held at Emory Hotel in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
Among those affected are journalists from People Daily, K24, and other platforms such as Kameme TV and various radio stations. The list of those sacked includes big names in the media industry.
Mediamax has previously undergone a similar round of layoffs in less than a year, with the company citing business slowdown due to the pandemic as the reason. However, some insiders believe that the company is using the pandemic as an excuse for internal issues.
