On Friday, the Kenyan government launched a capacity development programme targeting veterinarians and farmers to boost their capacity to protect animals from disasters linked to extreme weather events.

According to Judy Kimaru, campaigns manager at World Animal Protection, training and awareness creation are key to securing the livelihoods of people living in areas prone to disasters.

“Many people living in areas prone to disasters rely on animals for their livelihoods and survival. Protecting animals secures their livelihood and food security,” Kimaru said.

World Animal Protection will be rolling out a free online course targeting veterinary doctors and farmers to strengthen their capacity to rescue farmed animals and wildlife affected by climate-related disasters.

The online training programme will be implemented across the sub-Saharan African region, where climatic shocks like droughts, floods, and disease outbreaks have had a negative impact on livestock.
