On June 19, 2020, two Kenya Air Force C27J Spartan aircrafts successfully airlifted 27 Kenyans from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, bringing an end to their three-month ordeal due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The stranded Kenyans, including Silas Oulo, a teacher who had been in Ethiopia since January, were delighted to see the KDF flight arrive and expressed their gratitude at being able to return home.
According to reports, dozens of Kenyans are still stuck in various places around the world due to the pandemic, with plans underway to fly them back to the country.
One such group is a batch of 120 Kenyan students who have been stranded in Sudan's universities. Thanks to the efforts of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who is financing their evacuation, Kenya Airways has agreed to fly them back at a discounted price of Sh51,940 each, down from Sh56,604.
These students, who are mainly from the Coast region, had been stuck in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, since international flights were banned into and out of Kenya and Sudan in March.
As the pandemic continues to affect people worldwide, the plight of these Kenyan students went viral after a video clip was circulated showing them lamenting their frustrations and fears for their wellbeing in a foreign nation.
