AC Milan's return to Serie A after a three-month coronavirus shutdown has been marked by a setback for the team, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic ruled out of their first match back due to a calf injury.
Coach Stefano Pioli confirmed on Sunday that the 38-year-old Swedish forward will not be available for the match against relegation candidates Lecce at the empty Stadio Via del Mare on Monday.
According to Pioli, Ibrahimovic is working hard to recover from the injury, but his return is still uncertain.
“Ibrahimovic is better, he’ll have another check-up next week,” said Pioli.
Meanwhile, Argentine defender Mateo Musacchio's season appears to be over after he was forced to undergo ankle surgery.
“I fear that Musacchio’s season has been cut short,” the coach said.
AC Milan players underwent coronavirus tests on Sunday morning before traveling to Lecce, and the team is now focused on achieving European qualification with 12 games remaining in the season.
Coach Pioli emphasized the importance of staying focused and not getting distracted by rumors surrounding the team's future, including reports that former RB Leipzig coach Ralf Rangnick may replace him next season.
“We’re professionals, we’re used to working while lots of rumours circle around us,” said Pioli.
“We can’t get distracted and must only think about actions on the pitch and taking charge of our fate.”
