On June 21, 2020, the Nation reported on a brazen attempt to steal donated medical equipment, one of which was successful, involving senior public officials in Kenya.
The incident has sparked concerns that the theft could jeopardize future philanthropic acts towards the country, as government bureaucrats dealing with investigations evade questions on the matter.
Despite the Nation's efforts to reach out to government officials, including calls, text messages, and requests for interviews, none have been willing to go on the record.
The successful theft involved equipment donated by Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma, while the thwarted attempt saved a consignment from the Chinese government.
Two public officers have since confirmed to the Nation that senior government officials were involved in both attempts, but have declined to come on the record for fear of reprisal and intimidation.
As Kenya struggles to acquire testing kits and personal protective gear for health workers, the theft has raised concerns about the country's ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
